The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom Of The Opera – silent Film With Music By Minima

Tickets available at https://wegottickets.com/event/657355

Also at Melbourne Gallery: £15

Doors open: 7:00pm
Start time: 7:30pm

Beneath the sewers of the Paris Opera House dwells a masked figure. He is the Phantom, a hideously disfigured composer whose dream is to turn chorus singer Christine into a diva. Lon Chaney, the “Man of a Thousand Faces”, dominates this classic adaptation of the 1910 novel. His ghastly make-up and outrageous performance made The Phantom of the Opera one of the great classics of American silent film.

Minima have specialised in live accompaniment to screenings of silent films since 2006. Their electrifying original score for The Phantom of the Opera captures the horror of the story, but also finds pathos, romance and humour. Drums, bass, guitar and cello strike up a thrilling relationship with the film, following the Phantom down into his subterranean nightmare world.

“Minima are one of the leading bands accompanying silent film in Europe.” (Barbican Centre, London)
“Minima’s spine-tingling music clung to each twist of the movie… spellbinding accompaniment.” (The Guardian)
“Minima turned the 1925 Phantom of the Opera into an immersive and gripping emotional experience.” (Swansea International Festival)

Jazz night: A Christmas Carol with Alan Barnes

Tickets available at: https://wegottickets.com/event/657732

Also at Melbourne Gallery: £15

Doors open: 7.00pm

Performance starts: 7.30pm

Like the Dickens classic itself, Alan Barnes’s “Christmas Carol” has something for everyone. A family night out that is also a treat for the jazz connoisseur; it will delight anyone who loves music or literature – or just Christmas – taking the audience through the characters and scenes of this festive story. Readings from the original Dickens tell the story, and after each scene eight virtuoso musicians bring the characters and scenes to life, switching audiences from hilarity to pathos with a skill that would have done credit to Dickens himself!
A gruff baritone sax plays Scrooge, his lost love Belle is a lyrical alto, his clerk Bob Cratchit a cheery clarinet and Marley’s Ghost walks in the person of a swinging trombone. Just as Scrooge’s ghosts take him on a tour of his life, so the movements of this suite seemed each to have a benevolent presiding ghost, celebrating the spirit of jazz greats past and present.
The music and readings inspire the full range of Dickens’s imagination and emotion: from terror and remorse through to love and then irresistible joy: "God Bless Us Every One!"
“Barnes is a true Dickensian. He is a serious reader of the novels. It is a clear blunder of providence that he was born too late to appear in their pages!” Hot News
With:
Alan Barnes on saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet
Bruce Adams on trumpet
Mark Nightingale on trombone
Robert Fowler on saxophones and clarinet
Karen Sharp on saxophones and clarinet
David Newton on piano
Simon Thorpe on bass
Clark Tracey on drums

The contentious restoration of Melbourne Parish Church 1824 - 1888

A talk by William Bates of the Four Shires History Team on the contentious restoration of Melbourne Parish Church in the 1800s.

William will look at Joseph Deans’ initial idea for the restoration, how money became the dominant factor, the progress and visibility of the restorers’ work, and the opening service. Initially, many resisted the restoration. Once on board with it, they spent twice as much as they had intended and the Prime Minister of the day visited the town to raise funds.

Don’t miss this illustrated talk which takes us to the heart of Victorian Melbourne and its achievements.

A free event. Unticketed. Everyone welcome.
